Staying Healthy in Monsoon

  • Now that the monsoon has finally arrived, it’s the time for water borne diseases and viral infections. The minimum thing one can do in this season is to avoid stagnation of water in and around one's neighborhood. Stagnated water becomes the breeding ground for mosquitoes which multiply and increase in their number by many folds and cause diseases.

It is also common for drinking water to get contaminated during this season. One has to take proper measures to protect himself from the likely diseases and infections.

The most common diseases occurring during monsoon are as follows :

    • Flu and Common cold
    • Diarrhea
    • Conjunctivitis
    • Typhoid fever
    • Malaria
    • Leptospirosis
    • Dengue

As the saying goes “Prevention is better than cure”, its always beneficial to take appropriate measures to avoid likely infections and diseases. Prevention is the key for staying healthy.

Adopt the following preventive measures to protect yourself and others from infections :

    • Always cover your mouth when you sneeze and throw the used tissue immediately. If there is no tissue handy, sneeze into your upper sleeve but not into your hand.
    • Clean your hands thoroughly with antiseptic soap properly for 20-30 seconds in running water.Alcohol based hand sanitizers also work good
    • Stay home when sick. This way you can prevent passing the infection or disease to others
    • Clean frequently used objects and surfaces. for eg. Door knobs, keyboard, phones etc
    • Always carry an umbrella or raincoat. If you were caught in a sudden downpour and were drenched completely. Dry yourselves as soon as possible and have hot soup or tea.
    • Keep your body dry and warm to avoid cold and cough. Viruses usually attack when the body’s temperature is low
    • Stay away from wet walls if you are asthmatic. They contain harmful fungus.
    • Never enter an air conditioned room with wet hair and wet clothes
    • Wear linens instead of cotton as they get dried quickly and also avoid wearing too much jewelry
    • Use a strong mosquito repellent or a cream to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
    • Pollution of raw vegetables is very common during monsoons. Wash vegetables thoroughly with running water and steam them well before consuming. Avoid street foods, uncooked foods and salads.
    • Drink plenty of water to keep your body well hydrated. Drink herbal teas with antibacterial properties like holybasil tea.
